Sell something…

A tip at a time from FormerlyCorporate.com.  #1 If you start a business, you need to sell something…that someone else will buy.

Think hard now:  Do you really want to build a whole new market?  It can be done, don’t get me wrong.  Bezos, Gates, Jobs, Zuckerberg all have done it.  It took a long time and lots of other peoples’ money, for them to create something that others would want to pay for.

So you might start with a product or service that people already want.  Seems obvious…but I’ve seen so many business owners fall for the fallacy that their interest or hobby will drive a viable business.  Are there other people making money doing what you do?  Good–then there’s a market for it!

  1. I learned this lesson the hard way. We can fall in love with our business idea and not realize that just because we know people need it, that does not mean they want it.

    • Agreed! Pat I see two points here: First, that we fall in love with our business and have trouble seeing in a clear light what its strengths AND challenges are.

Second, to whether people want what we offer or not. Part of the art of sales is to show people why/that they may indeed want our solution, and learn how to reveal their need to them. And not every prospect is an ideal client.
